Introducing the T Bar pendant — and the five Afghan tourmalines you can have set in one.

There is a reason elongated tourmalines look the way they do. Tourmaline crystallizes in the trigonal system, growing along a single dominant axis — the c-axis — that produces long, prismatic columns. The stripes visible on the surface of a rough tourmaline crystal are growth striations, running parallel to that axis. When a cutter works with this material, they have a choice: cut across the crystal and lose the length, or honor the geometry and preserve it.

The stones in the new T Bar collection were cut the second way. Each one is between 21 and 28 millimeters long and 3 to 4.5 millimeters wide — aspect ratios between 4.8 and 7.7 that make a ring setting impractical and a pendant inevitable. The length is the point.

The setting

The T Bar pendant is a hand-carved bezel with an integrated bail. Set vertically, the stone drops straight down from the chain — the full color transition readable from top to bottom, the length of the crystal visible as a single uninterrupted element. Set horizontally, it becomes a bar pendant: the stone reads across the collarbone, the color shift moving left to right.

Both orientations use the same setting. You choose at checkout. It is not a different piece — it is the same stone, the same bezel, a different relationship to gravity.

The walls of the bezel are hand-carved in wax before casting. This means the metal is not uniform — it has a slight organic quality, a variation in wall thickness that a machine-made setting does not have. That is not incidental. It is the mark of the hand.

The five stones

The longest stone in the collection. Near-clear at one end, transitioning to a clean baby blue at the other across the full 28 millimeters. The color shift is subtle but the length is not — this is a stone that reads from across the room before the color even registers.

The most saturated. Deep green at one end, shifting to blue at the other — the color comes from iron in the tourmaline lattice, the ratio between Fe²⁺ and Fe³⁺ changing as the crystal grew. At 4mm wide it is also the most substantial stone in the group, with a presence that the slimmer stones do not have.

Clarity — you can see straight through it. The color runs from teal to blue, the transition visible through the full depth of the stone, not just across the surface. If you have ever wondered what it looks like to set a window, this is approximately that.

The quietest piece in the collection. White at one end, ice blue at the other, 3.2mm wide. Most elongated stones announce themselves. This one does not. It is for the person who wants length without volume, presence without noise.

The most technically interesting. Tourmaline is strongly dichroic — the way it absorbs light differs along different crystallographic axes. Face-up, this stone reads clear to pale green. Rotate it 90° and the green axis saturates to a vivid yellow-green. In a pendant, it catches the light differently every time it moves.

How to order

Each stone has its own listing in the shop. Select your metal — TruSilver, 14k yellow, rose, green, or white palladium gold — and note your preferred orientation (vertical drop or horizontal T Bar) in the order comments. Chain is sold separately; a 1.5mm ball chain is available as an add-on in 16, 18, or 20 inch lengths.

All five stones are untreated. All are from Afghanistan. All are one of one — when a stone sells, that listing closes.

Production time is 8 to 12 weeks. Final price is confirmed before production begins.
