Spinel — MgAl₂O₄ — is a cubic oxide in which grey color arises from Fe²⁺/Fe³⁺ substitution at octahedral sites. Burma (Myanmar) has historically produced some of the world's finest spinel alongside its celebrated rubies — both gems forming in the same marble-hosted metamorphic deposits of the Mogok Valley. Grey spinel is singly refractive — its cubic symmetry means no birefringence, no pleochroism. What you see at any angle is the stone's true color, unmodified by viewing geometry.
Under magnification this stone reveals sector color zoning, a partially healed fracture with dramatic yellow-to-blue iridescent flash, and fine oriented inclusions aligned along a crystallographic direction. Grey spinel — the undiscovered luxury stone.
